Gerascophobia, or fear of growing old, is one of the most common fears, especially amongst women. Fear of aging stems from many anxieties, from health to existential to beauty concerns, and is completely valid. In today’s youth-obsessed culture, people are terrified at the notion of wrinkles, sagging, and other superficial factors. People tend to forget that aging is a natural part of life, and should be embraced instead. Of course, like many other fears, addressing and facing it is easier said than done. So this time around, Skin Dewi is asking you to join us in discovering what aging truly means and why it’s something that shouldn’t be feared!

We believe that to overcome your fears, you must first understand it. When we age, our skin goes through many changes. For example, the number of pigment-containing cells in our skin decreases, so pigmented spots (liver spots) may appear across the body. Changes in connective tissue also reduces the skin’s strength and elasticity, resulting in sagginess. The sebaceous glands in our pores also produce less oil as we age, so it’s more difficult to keep the skin moist, causing dryness and wrinkles. Whilst we may not be able to permanently reverse the effects of aging, there are lots of preventative steps we can take!

Our environment and lifestyle choices can cause our skin to age rapidly or even prematurely. By taking a couple of preventative actions, we can influence our skin to age slower. The most important thing to know is that the sun plays a major role in prematurely aging our skin. So make a habit of protecting your skin from the sun every day by using and reapplying sunscreen (SPV 30-50, reapply every 2 hours). Make sure you exercise often to improve circulation and boost your immune system, drink tons of water, and eat a well-balanced diet. Other lifestyle changes that cause premature aging include excessive drinking and smoking. If you can successfully build these habits, you’ll not only be taking care of your skin health, but also your overall health!
