The sandalwood tree is an evergreen, which can grow up to 15 metres tall. Both the wood and the oil which is extracted from it have been highly valued for centuries, which means that the slow-growing trees have been over-harvested in many areas. As a result, Indian sandalwood is now a threatened species and Hawaiian sandalwood is not nearly as abundant as it once was.
Sandalwood oil’s soothing and antibacterial properties mean that it is particularly useful in skincare products, as it is believed to help reduce inflammation, shrink spots and pimples, ease skin irritation and assist in fading scar tissue. It is also believed to have anti-ageing properties, and can help to soften the skin by improving its ability to retain moisture.
